Push the bookends a bit farther apart on the shelf where you keep the specification sheets for cars you can’t own because Volkswagen just released details for its Polo R WRC.
Just like the regular Polo, VW’s hottest-ever version is sold in Europe but not North America. With 220 hp, the car is inspired by the WRC-bound Polo R and comes with 18-inch wheels, a spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips and much more aggressive-looking bumpers.
The car will be built in a limited run and is only available in the colors you see here and as a three-door hatchback.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter TSI four cylinder sourced from the GTI which is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Just like the GTI, 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque are sent to the front wheels which is enough to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.4 seconds, while the car’s top speed is electronically limited to 150 mph.
VW is also outfitting the car’s cabin with special trim to set it apart with leather and Alcantara-trimmed bucket seats, a three-spoke steering wheel and aluminum pedals.
As small a comfort as it might be, there will only be 2,500 models made, meaning Europe won’t exactly be rife with exciting sub-compact hatchbacks inspired by rally driving. It’s also expensive — VW will ask €33,900 for the car which puts the car above the $45,000 mark.
