Volkswagen will have a large presence at this year’s Geneva Motor Show with cars like the new Golf GTI, and today spy photos are showing another one of VW’s Geneva-bound vehicles: the Jetta SportWagen.
Despite bearing the Jetta name, this car will actually share the same underpinnings as the seventh-generation Golf.
Volkswagen introduced the new Golf at last year’s Paris Motor Show, and now the German automaker is offering it with a slew of variants including a plug-in hybrid, an EV, a wagon and others, all of which are built on the Golf’s new MQB platform. Weight loss of about 220 lbs was achieved on the new regular Golf thanks to the new platform. Given that, you can expect the new SportWagen to lose weight too.
The current Jetta SportWagen uses either a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that makes 140 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas motor rated at 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque.
The 2014 Golf’s styling has now been transferred onto the wagon as well, giving it a more aggressive front end thanks to the slightly revised headlight shape. The rear taillights are covered to make them appear like the current generation Golf Wagon — a dead giveaway that this the new Jetta SportWagen.
