Danica Patrick has become the first woman to win the pole position at a NASCAR top-division race and she did so today during qualifying for the biggest event of the year, the Daytona 500.
Posting a lap of 196.434 mph on Sunday, Patrick will start in the pole position for the 55th annual Daytona 500. In her qualifying lap, she covered the 2.5-mile oval in 45.817 seconds. It was also the fastest qualifying mark for the Daytona 500 since 1990.
This is Patrick’s second pole in NASCAR, having taken the honors in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona last season. Jeff Gordon will start in second after a qualifying run of 196.292 mph.
The Daytona 500 will kick off on Sunday, February 24th.
