When Volkswagen finishes launching all seven planned variants of its popular Golf within the next 12 months, the Golf R will sit at the top of the lineup boasting 286 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.
The new Golf R, which is closely related to the Audi A3, will be the most powerful production Golf in the model’s storied history and will be powered by a 2.0-liter TSI engine. Paired with the six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission, the Golf R will accelerate to 62 mph in five seconds with a 155 mph top speed.
Power will be sent to all four wheels through the new Haldex 5 system. The German automaker said the system allows for keener handling due to a faster transfer of power between the front and rear axles.
Additionally, the new Golf R is packed with lightweight technology to bring its weight to around 2,645 lbs. Despite having even more performance than its predecessor, the new Golf R will have better fuel economy.
The new Golf R is rumored to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year, with sales commencing in early 2014.
