Although Audi will give Americans a sneak preview of the upcoming A3 sedan at the 2013 New York Auto Show, the German automaker has confirmed that the vehicle will make its official debut at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show in China.
The Audi A3 will come to America in both sedan and five-door hatch models (previous reports had indicated only the sedan would be available in the US) and will be offered with both gasoline and diesel powerplants. A new 1.8-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder will join the popular 2.0-liter TFSI engine, while the diesel option will be the 2.0-liter TDI currently found in the A3.

The compact sedan model will undoubtedly make a good competitor to the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, though the CLA 45AMG, (which will also debut at the NY Auto Show in two weeks time) will offer more performance. To match that Audi may yet be planning a production version of its A3 sedan concept (below) with a 408 hp version of the same turbocharged 5-cylinder engine found in the TT-RS.
