Volvo V60 Diesel Plug-In Hybrid Heads to NY Auto Show

Volvo will be bringing its diesel-powered V60 plug-in hybrid to the 2013 New York Auto Show, alongside a new addition to the American Volvo lineup.

The Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid is a nominee for the 2013 World Green Car of the Year award, the winner of which will be announced at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The show will also host the world debut of new Volvo R-Design trimmed products, along with an as-yet unnamed new product for North America.

The V60 Plug-In Hybrid is the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid, and uses a 2.4-liter five-cylinder turbo diesel to power the front wheels, while the rears are turned via an electric motor that makes the equivalent of 70 hp. The V60 can travel up to 31 miles on all-electric power, and offers three driving modes: “Pure, Hybrid and Power.”

Running against the V60 in the competition for World Green Car of the Year are the Renault Zoe and Tesla Model S.

The new North American product may in fact be the V60 Plug-In, but other possibilities include the V40 and V40 Cross Country.
