With Ray LaHood stepping down as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation earlier this year, President Barack Obama has nominated Charlotte, North Carolina Mayor Anthony Foxx to take up the role.
Foxx will be the first black nominee for Obama’s second-term Cabinet and once it has been confirmed by the Senate, Foxx will run the Transportation Department. Foxx has experience in boosting transit infrastructure as a mayor, and has used those projects to help create jobs.
His projects include creating an electric tram service to Charlotte, an expansion of a light rail system and the opening of a third runway at Charlotte’s airport. He was originally elected mayor of Charlotte in 2009.
