The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said today that it might create a “silver” rating system to examine how well vehicles protect older occupants.

NHTSA might also consider how rear-seat passengers and pedestrians fare in crashes and is considering new test procedures for electric cars.

Previous concerns with electric vehicle (EV) safety regulations included noise generators – EVs don’t generate an exhaust note. Because of that, they pose a potentially greater risk to pedestrians who might not hear them approaching.
