Volkswagen announced today that it will build a 10-speed dual clutch transmission and a high-performance diesel engine.
The new transmission has a wide gear ratio and will offer improved fuel economy by allowing for the engine to stay in a lower rpm range more often.
Implementing that transmission will position Volkswagen at the forefront of transmission technology. Land Rover will soon offer a nine-speed transmission built by ZF, although it will be a torque-converter automatic. Hyundai is also working on a 10-speed torque-converter automatic that will come in the next Genesis.
A high-performance diesel engine was also announced, and will be capable of 134-hp per liter. The engines will use a high-pressure injection system at up to 3,000 bar.
