Signs like the one above may become a thing of the past if Germany’s opposition government gets its way.
Identifying unrestricted speed zones on the country’s famous autobahn road system, Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the SPD party is seeking to have them all torn down and replaced with a 120 km/h (75 mph) limit.
While no formal political action has been taken Gabriel has made his intentions clear, citing new statistics that show fewer deaths and serious injuries on restricted roads.
This information is, however, opposed by the German automobile organization ADAC, which claims that while autobahns account for a third of all travel on German roads, they account for just 11 percent of all traffic accidents and fatalities. Conversely, 60 percent of all deaths on German streets happen on country roads.
