The four-seater Gran Lusso Coupe may be a sleek and beautiful one-off concept car, but it hints at the German automaker’s possibility of reviving the 8 Series nameplate. According to company sources, production of a model based on the Gran Lusso Coupe is under consideration.
As for the concept, it was built on a modified, rear-wheel drive 7 Series platform and powered by the 760i’s 6.0-liter V12 engine with 536 hp. But since the design was the main reason for the one off, there isn’t much to read into with the choice of powertrain from BMW. Regardless, the German automaker is mulling over a return to the high-end, luxury coupe market, especially with Mercedes-Benz introducing a new S-Class coupe and bringing in a new era of the CL-Class model.
The 8 Series was originally produced from 1989 to 1999, and though no final decision has been made about an actual production revival, chances are it’ll be heavily influenced by the Gran Lusso Coupe if it gets the green light.
