Car-to-car communication is one of the technologies that automakers are investigating to bring autonomous cars to the market, and Ford is not one to be left out.
Ford is testing a system which lights up an indicator on the dash of following vehicles, when a vehicle in front uses its brakes in an emergency situation. The main benefits of this will come when a car is braking hard, but can’t be seen due to corners or other traffic.
“Car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications represent one of the next major advancements in vehicle safety,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford’s chief technical officer and vice president at Ford Research and Innovation. “Ford is committed to further real-world testing here and around the world with the goal of implementation in the foreseeable future.”
The test is park of “Safe Intelligent Mobility,” a four-year joint industry research project. The project brings together many interested parties who are working towards standardized car-to-car communication technology.
