The German automaker is planning to use its S-Class to develop a Rolls-Royce Phantom rival according to Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche. The new S-Class was developed to support six different models, along with three different wheelbases in hopes of broadening Mercedes-Benz’s appeal in the high-end, luxury market.
Sitting at the top of that range will be a “Pullman” model, aimed to be built on an extra-long-wheelbase variant of the S-Class with ultra luxury in mind. The 2014 S-Class, which is heading to dealerships this fall, will eventually be offered with three different wheelbases: standard, long, and extra-long.
“We see a chance to extend our leadership at the top end of the luxury car market,” said Zetsche in an interview with Autocar UK. ”We plan to extend the number of models, and a Pullman is included in those plans.”
