BMW has been spotted testing an ActiveHybrid X5 model in California, as these spy photos reveal.

The SUV buried underneath the camouflage is an X5 and on the side and rear of the vehicle are stickers that say “Hybrid Test Vehicle.” In recent years, BMW has expanded its ActiveHybrid offerings with its 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series models, and it’s likely that the new-generation X5 will see a hybrid variant as well in the near future.

The BMW ActiveHybrid models feature a 3.0-liter, turbocharged straight-six engine with 315 hp mated to a 55-hp electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Could the German automaker also be working on a high-performance ActiveHybrid X5 M?
