Volkswagen has reconfirmed that the Golf GTD will be heading to the U.S., likely for the 2016 model year.
The GTD will be available as a two- or four-door hatchback and will be the automaker’s first performance-oriented diesel model for the U.S.
It will be powered by a 2.0-liter, turbodiesel four-cylinder with 184 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. According to Volkswagen, the Golf GTD accelerates to 60 mph from a standstill in about seven seconds and is capable of achieving over 40 mpg on the highway.
U.S. Volkswagen diesel sales in are on the rise with the German automaker on track to sell 100,000 oil burners in the U.S. this year – about a 10 percent growth compared to 2012. The Golf GTD is expected to be priced around $27,000 and the brand expects it to account for between five and 10 percent of Golf sales.
