Volkswagen is teasing its 2015 Golf R, hinting at possible debut during the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
A date hasn’t even been announced yet for its official debut, but the timing and territory of the next major auto show is a strong indicator. Where else but Frankfurt would VW debut its hottest car this year?
Highlights on the car include 18-inch alloy wheels, a quad exhaust and a more aggressive body kit. The photo above is carefully doctored to hide the revised front fascia, which will feature a lower lip and wider air ducts than other models in the range.
Like the rest of the new Golf family, it will ride on VW’s MQB platform, which will mean a larger and probably lighter overall product. The current version uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder to make 256 hp, but past rumors suggest the new version could be just shy of the 300-hp mark.
As is the case with the current model, VW will also implement its 4Motion all-wheel drive system to offer its halo car plenty of traction. A manual transmission is the only option in current models, although VW has offered a DSG in past versions. Given the Volkswagen Group’s choice to switch even some of its most red-hot products including the Porsche 911 GT3, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if the new Golf R follows suit.
