Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo franchise is much more than a video game.

It spawns real race car drivers through the Playstation GT Academy in partnership with Nissan each year, and now BMW is releasing a teaser image showing a concept car designed specifically for the game.

“Gran Turismo and BMW share a genetic passion for cars – both modern and classic,” BMW design executive Adrian van Hooydonk said. “I’ve followed this racing game franchise from its beginnings and am extremely excited about the increased visual realism of Gran Turismo 6 and its incredibly authentic driving experience.”

The Vision Gran Turismo, as it’s called, comes 15 years after the first game was released. For BMW, increased involvement presents an opportunity for BMW to market itself more to automotive enthusiasts. Of course, for those playing the game it’s a change to “drive” cars that don’t ever really exist outside of car shows.

Of course, the usual specifications would be more-or-less meaningless in this case. Interestingly, the Vision Gran Turismo concept seems to share some of its styling cues with the upcoming i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.
