Raise your hand if you like functional small cars with grossly overpowered engines. Now that all of your primary upper-body appendages are above your heads, use your non-dominant hand to follow the jump and learn about Volkswagen’s latest fun-machine, the 2015 Golf R.
It’s hard to believe Vee-Dub’s venerable Golf is entering its seventh generation, but it’s true. And thankfully for car enthusiasts around the world this hot hatch is taking advantage of that supposedly lucky number.
The 2015 R model will be powered by a trumped up 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, essentially the same unit that’s under the hood of Audi’s enticing S3 small sedan.
However, unlike today’s base GTI, which delivers a solid 200 ponies from the same displacement, the R takes things to a new level. This über Golf ships with a monstrous 296 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.
More good news for enthusiasts can be found immediately aft of the engine’s bell housing. The 2.0-liter turbo can be matched to either a manual or dual-clutch automatic transmission, both of with feature half-a-dozen speeds.
But as any gearhead knows, 300 ponies routed exclusively to a vehicle’s front wheels is a recipe for a whole lot of not good. Nipping potential handling issues in the bud and providing ample traction in every season the 2015 Golf R features all-wheel drive.
This exciting hot hatchback should go on sale in Europe later this year as a 2014 model, but it’s not expected to make the trans-Atlantic trip until sometime next year.
