Volkswagen’s XL1 is designed to sip fuel thanks in large part to its light 1,700-pound weight, and now it seems Volkswagen may leverage that ultra-light frame into something a little faster and more fun.
German automotive site Bild is reporting that Volkswagen is considering taking the 1,198-cc, 190-hp V-twin engine that can regularly be found in the Ducati Panigale, and fitting it onto the XL1’s frame. The car is said to be called the XL Sport, and Bild has a photo of Ferdinand Piech, the company’s CEO, showing off a 3D prototype image to a group of students at the Vienna University of Technology, showing a sports car version of the strange looking XL1.
In the past, rumors have circulated that Volkswagen was indeed looking into a performance oriented XL1, said to be called the XR1, though those reports claimed that VW was considering using a 2.0-liter four cylinder from the Golf GTI.
