Roughly 61,000 SUVs from Volkswagen are the subject of an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The investigation opened today and includes Volkswagen Tiguans from the 2009 to 2011 model years. NHTSA has received 26 complaints about a partial or complete loss of exterior lighting. A recall related to the alleged issue hasn’t been announced yet, and likely won’t begin soon.

“The reports suggest the problem worsens over time with additional exterior lighting malfunctioning as the problem progresses. Most of the complaints report finding an overheated and melted fuse in the under-hood fuse box,” NHTSa said.

Initial investigations need to be upgraded to an engineering analysis before NHTSA will request a manufacturer to proceed with a recall.
