Bespoke Italian automaker Bertone is nearing bankruptcy according to a recent report.
Despite having a presence at recent European auto shows with custom concepts, such as the Bertone Jet 2+2, the coachbuilder has struggled to garner any orders and is operating at a loss. Even a sub-division, created to build one-off cars for clients called Bertone Workshop, failed to gain ground.
It is being reported that Bertone has had to furlough 165 of its employees without pay and 10 interns have been permanently let go. The company is currently in the process of finding a new buyer with the assistance of a court administrator with a Turkey-based company apparently interested at a price of around $2.7 million. If the deal is approved by an Italian judge, the company will file bankruptcy early next year.
The Italian media is reporting that there are seven other parties interested in buying Bertone.
