Infiniti is acknowledging that in order to stay competitive in the luxury market, it needs more performance-oriented models in its lineup.
Three years ago, Infiniti created the Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) which has struggled to gain traction on the marketplace with the Q60 IPL model. But according to Infiniti CEO Johan de Nysschen, the Japanese automaker is well aware that Infiniti lacks “thoroughbred, high-end performance cars that take no prisoners,” in its lineup.
In essence, Infiniti now wants to create its own competitor to BMW’s M and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG sub-brands and whether or not IPL will be that sub-brand is still open for discussion. Recently, de Nysschen expressed how Infiniti’s flagship models could have as much as 600 hp.
“I don’t say that every single Infiniti car line should have such a model,” said de Nysschen. “But I do say that we need a high-performance subbrand.”
