10. Subaru Forester - 27 MPG Combined

The Subaru Forester features all-wheel drive and is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 170 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. It lands 10th on our list with a 24 MPG city, 32 MPG highway rating that’s good for 27 MPG combined. Priced from $22,820, the Subaru Forester’s price tag lands it on our list over other vehicles that also get a 27 MPG combined rating.

Also worth mentioning here are the Mitsubishi Outlander ($23,820), BMW X1 sDrive28i ($31,825) and Audi Q5 ($38,195), all of which also get a 27 MPG combined rating but which cost more than the Subaru.

Not one SUV made the list. These are all CUVs. There is a difference.

    Good thing.

Good point. It’s technically number 1 but we chose to leave it off the list as it’s ultra low volume.

It’s too bad that image has rendered the public leery of the much more practical minivan, in favor of the SUV. Funny how, in eschewing the body-on-frame design of earlier generations, and adopting the construction of the minivan, the SUV has become even more the thing. I drive a Toyota Sienna, which seats 8, is extremely comfortable, only costs $30 to fill up, only costs $25/month to insure (thanks to Insurance Panda), and outperforms most SUVs on safety tests…. I love my Sienna and wish people with families would start considering minivans more than SUVs.
