Rental Cars Expose Young Adults to New Vehicles: Study

A new survey has revealed that young adults not only want to own vehicles but are using car rentals as extended test drives.

The survey, which was conducted by Enterprise Holdings, found that 79 percent of the 25- to 34-year-olds surveyed believed owning one’s own vehicle is “extremely important.” Even more interesting is the survey found that 68 percent said their first experience with new automotive technology was through rental vehicles.

Automakers are beginning to realize that rental cars are a great way to expose younger buyers to their product. According to Kurt Kohler, senior vice president for acquisition and marketing at Enterprise, millennials that rent vehicles and use them as extended test drives are often in the mood to shop for a new car afterwards.

Also revealed in the survey is that 53 percent of renters chose a vehicle based on their desire to try something new and ultimately motivated 28 percent to start shopping for a new car.

A total of 1,363 participants were randomly selected for the survey and each participant had to currently own a vehicle, have rented a vehicle within the last six months and was at least 25 years old.
