The Toyota GT86 TRD Griffon concept has managed a lap around Japan’s Tsukuba circuit in just 00:58.407, beating out high-horsepower cars like the Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Gallardo.
Weight savings is the biggest factor for the GT86 Griffon’s quick lap time, shedding 500 pounds compared to a stock GT86 to tip the scales at just 2,280 lbs. The front bumper, doors, roof, rear bumper and hood are all made of lightweight carbon fiber, while even the side windows were replaced with polycarbonate to save weight.
Aerodynamic enhancements are found all over the body of this special GT86, while a slight power boost from 200 to 226 hp also motivated the car to run a lap of Tsukuba in under one minute. Just about everything in the engine, including the pistons, connecting rod, and camshaft are also replaced with specially developed TRD parts, just like the suspension setup which is thoroughly revised.
