Top 10 Most Fuel Efficient Hatchbacks Under $25K

3. Honda Insight - 42 MPG Combined

It might be surprising to some that doesn’t pay close attention to the car market that hybrids are available for under $25,000. Then again, with so many hybrids hitting the marketplace, automakers are forced to price their vehicles aggressively in order to compete. The Honda Insight features a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a hybrid powertrain that provides a total system output of 98 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. Priced from $18,725, it’s actually one of the cheapest hybrids available while achieving 41 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. Then again, the 40 mpg combined rating is identical to the Mitsubishi Mirage, and if you’re not entirely sold on hybrids, perhaps the Mirage is your choice.

I like that the honda insight is on the list, even though im not a huge fan. I would replace it with the crz, which is NOT being phased out like the Insight. Granted the crz doesnt quite get the combined rating of the insight, but its close. So is the pricing, and its the ONLY hybrid available with a stick. Its the enthusiast’s hybrid hatchback of choice, albeit without a backseat.

I thought the CR-Z was being axed too?

  • Mike

Wondering how the excellent SkyActiv Mazda 3 Hatch didn’t make the list. Well under the price cap and offers better MPG than the Yaris as well as more space and equipment.

  • John

Nope just the insight in the US, but in Europe, the CRZ is getting taken off the market too.

Very strange not including the destination charge. It’s not like it’s an option. You could also have not included the cost of wheels, but similarly, you can’t buy a car without wheels. You found a way to wedge the Prius into the list, but I find it takes away from the premise of your article.

You forgot all the plug-ins. iMiev, Spark EV, Smart ED, Nissan Leaf. Some of these are below $25K before tax incentives and all of them are after.

I really love the way the Prius c looks!

  • Ugly

Yes, but drive one first to see if you like it. You may find it a bit noisy, slow and the ride uncomfortable…

  • Marco

You have the mpg for the Prius C mixed up.
