Bentley to Go Racing in America

Bentley isn’t going to let Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini have all the fun in North America.

The British automaker announced today at the 2014 New York Auto Show that it will be returning to North American motorsports starting with the second half of this year’s Pirelli World Challenge as it prepares for a full season of competition in 2015. The first race for the Bentley Continental GT3 will be at Road America in Wisconsin and will be competing under the Dyson Racing banner.

This is the first time since 2003 that Bentley has competed on the racetracks in North America. Initially only a single car will be competing in Pirelli World Challenge on June 21 at Elkhart Lake while a second car will be added later in the season.

Development work and assignments for the single-driver sprint races will be shared between Chris Dyson and long-time Dyson Racing team members and Bentley Boys Guy Smith and Butch Leitzinger. Leitzinger was previously the driver for the class-winning Bentley EXP-8 at Le Mans in 2001 and 2002. Smith was the driver in the Le Mans-winning Bentley Speed 8 in 2003 and was also a development driver for the Bentley GT3 race program and is currently piloting one in the 2014 European Blancpain Series.

“Now that our European motorsport programme is up and running, securing a return to racing in our biggest market is the natural next step,” said Bentley’s Director of Motorsports, Brian Gush. “It’s extremely exciting to be back here with a racecar, and I’m delighted to be working with the Dyson team. Their operation reflects and embodies so many Bentley values, and I’m very confident in their abilities. This venture is the next step in the Continental GT3 plan, which we hope will eventually see our customers racing in Bentleys all around the world.”
