Parent company Fiat-Chrysler has lofty ambitions for Jeep, trying to take it from a niche American brand up to a global player.
If its plans are realized, Jeep will move 1.5 million vehicles worldwide by the year 2018, spurred by large growth in South America and China. For context, last year Jeep managed to sell 731,565 units worldwide.
The first step in the process will be getting the new Jeep Renegade into showrooms, which begins production in June of 2014 at the brand’s plant in Melfi, Italy. Late in 2014, the Renegade will enter production at a new facility in Pernambuco, Brazil to supply the South American market. As for China, the Renegade will also be built there, but not until sometime in late 2015.
Last year, Jeep moved 60,000 units in China, a number which should jump up once local production begins.
