Reports are surfacing that Porsche plans to expand its Cayenne lineup with a five-door coupe liftback model, similar to what BMW offers with its X4 and X6 and what Mercedes recently revealed in its Concept Coupe SUV at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. Still in its development phase, the Cayenne coupe, as it is being called, will be positioned as a sportier alternative to the current Cayenne SUV and will be offered with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines.
The Cayenne coupe will be one of seven new SUVs that are being developed on the Volkswagen Group’s new Audi-engineered MLB platform. The model is tentatively scheduled to be introduced in 2018 as part of the third-generation Cayenne. It is also likely that the German automaker will hold off a bit in order let it’s new Macan model settle into the marketplace.
According to an inside source speaking to AutoCar, Porsche has been considering a sporty Cayenne model for quite some time, but production capacity at the company’s Leipzig factory and the strong sales of the current Cayenne both served to back burner the project.
