You might not know how to properly check if the tires on your car are safe to use and the government wants to change that.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is launching a campaign to help educate drivers on tire safety. The new government campaign is called “TireWise” and will help consumers make more informed decisions on caring and choosing the right tires for their vehicles. According to the agency, each year there are almost 200 fatalities as a result of tire-related crashes and approximately 11,000 tire-related crashes overall.

Along with educating consumers on whether tires are too bald or properly inflated, the campaign also aims to teach about the proper type, size, rating, treadwear and the effects of high temperatures. Along with the campaign, NHTSA will update its SaferCar mobile app later this year so users can sign up to receive tire recall alerts as well as submit complaints.

“Safety is our top priority and following these simple guidelines will help prevent needless deaths and injuries every year,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a statement.
