BMW announced a new mobile app today that aims to help i3 and i8 owners reduce their at-home charging costs.

The company said today that it estimates owners can save up to $400 per year by replenishing their vehicles in off-peak hours using the mobile app. Compatible with both Android and iOS, the app automatically identifies the least expensive times to charge and is integrated into the existing BMW i Remote app.

Starting in 2012, BMW launched an electric car field trial with electric versions of the 1 Series. BMW said that many of the participants – called Electronauts – are among the first customers signing up for an i3 and that it is circulating the app to them first. BMW plans to make the app available to all i3 and i8 customers next year.

By using the app i3 owners will be able to automate their charging times for daily and weekly use. Because the app is integrated into i Remote, drivers are also able to assign preset climate controls, check their vehicle stats and remotely start, stop or adjust charging settings.
