Infiniti will begin producing its newest engine in America.
The Japanese automaker has announced the official start of production at the Infiniti Decherd Powertrain Plant, which will assemble the company’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. That powerplant will be used in the European versions of the Infiniti Q50 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class that is assembled in Alabama.
The new plant is a partnership between the Renault-Nissan and Daimler AG and around 200 new jobs have been added to support production. The company expects 200 more jobs to be added once the plant ramps up to its full 250,000 engine annual capacity. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will have 211 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.
“The opening of this new powertrain facility is an important step for Infiniti,” said Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen. “It is the first step of our manufacturing expansion that will include the start of vehicle production in China later this year and in Europe next year.”
