They always went by the body series – 3, 5, 7, Z, X…. there were rather rare 6 and 8, and the notion was that odd numbered models are 4-doors, and even numbered ones are 2-doors… so, the 1, 3, 5 and 7 are 4 door cars, and 2, 4, 6 and old 8 are 2-doors… then they had roadsters, the Z, and the SUV (SAV), which are X… recently they introduced GT versions (rather odd balls…) the next two numbers roughly gave an idea of an engine displacement, in older models the value was better matched to actual size of the engine… so, a 320, or a 520 would have a 4-cylinder 2.0 liter engine, while 540 or 740 would have a V8 4-liter… (actually, 4.4 liters, but that number was rounded down to 4 in cars, and was stated as 4.4 on the X5)… the 750 and new 760 are 5-liter and 6-liter V12… and of course, the M Gmbh – those are totally different beasts… hand-built engines… fine-tunes suspensions…
oh, and don’t forget the exotics.. like Z8.. or Z1… or the Nazca… so, the name change is nothing new…
