Companies love to celebrate anniversaries, and apparently BMW has something pretty special planned for its 100th birthday.
According to Auto Motor und Sport, BMW’s followup to the legendary M1 supercar may be coming in 2016 with an i9 badge on it, a name which the German company has trademarked.
The i9 will be BMW’s new halo sports car, and will share many of its components with the plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the i8. The gasoline engine won’t carry over however, as the i9 is rumored to six-cylinder power.
This will make the entire car heavier than the i8, tipping the scales around 3280 pounds, though the added power will help the i9 sprint to 60 mph in under four seconds. Exactly how much power will be on tap is unknown, but expect it to significantly dwarf the 362 hp found in the i8.
