How does a quad-turbo, flat-eight Porsche exotic sound to you?
According to a recent report, the German automaker is working on its own competitor to the Ferrari 458 that could resemble the 918 Spyder in styling. In prototype form, the new sports car is rumored to be sporting a flat-eight engine displacing about four liters with four turbos to give it around 600 hp. The forced induction powerplant likely has over 400 lb-ft of torque.
The recent fire issues with the Porsche 911 GT3 hinted that the German automaker might have found the threshold of performance with its flat-six powerplants. As a result, Porsche could be facing the idea that its six-cylinder engines won’t be capable of competing with Ferrari’s V8s. It is believed that the company is developing a new family of engines, both turbocharged and naturally aspirated, that will come in four-, six- and eight-cylinder configurations. The next-generation Porsche Boxster and Cayman are expected to be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill.
