Top 10 Production Cars With Outrageous Spoilers

Top 10 Production Cars With Outrageous Spoilers

Performance is more than racing stripes, chin splitters or gigantic exhaust tips. Speed is not something you can simply apply with sticky film or push clips; it takes careful engineering and attention to detail.

Accordingly, many new vehicles are dressed up with spoilers for an athletic look and ostensibly more downforce at speed. Some of these aerodynamic add-ons are functional, impacting how a car handles, but many of them are little more than styling appliqués.

Practical or purposeless, some of these wings are probably larger than they need to be, drawing more attention than Westboro Baptist Church protestors at an Elton John concert. Accordingly, here’s a list of the Top 10 Production Cars With Outrageous Spoilers. Sorry, there’s no Plymouth Superbird or any of vehicles from the Fast and Furious franchise; this post is limited to models currently in production.

2015 Nissan GT-R

Nissan GT-R

Nissan’s rocket-fast GT-R is a performance machine that can make even the most ham-handed driver look like Ayrton Senna. The vehicle’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 puts out 545 hp and 463 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent to the front and rear axles after passing through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Despite its somewhat blue-collar origins, the GT-R is a true performance car with blistering acceleration and racecar handling. Accordingly it looks fast with aerodynamic design elements including a big ol’ ironing board on its decklid. While hardly the largest spoiler on the market today, it’s still impossible to miss.

2014 Honda Civic Si Sedan

Honda Civic Si

Honda has a long tradition of building small, affordable performance cars. Past models like the S2000, CRX and Prelude are venerated by automotive enthusiasts. Regrettably in recent years, the company has lost touch with this heritage.

But at least they still offer a performance-tuned version of the Civic. Available in either sedan or coupe formats, the Si offers a smooth-running 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an ultra-slick six-speed manual transmission. The powerplant delivers 205 ponies and 174 lb-ft of torque.

SEE ALSO: 2014 Honda Civic Si Review

This car also features sporty design, large wheels and a performance-tuned chassis. Additionally, it’s got an outsized spoiler on its butt. The trunk lid-mounted wing isn’t grotesquely large, though it is pretty big when compared to the Civic Si’s petite tukus; also, its functionality seems dubious.

2014 Bentley Continental GT3-R

Bentley Continental GT3-R

Five-hundred-seventy-two horses, 518 lb-ft of raw twist, twin turbochargers, direct injection, an eight-speed automatic transmission, torque-vectoring all-wheel drive: With all of this cutting-edge hardware the Bentley Continental GT3-R is a racecar you can drive on the street.

The dash from zero to 60 miles an hour just 3.6 seconds; carbon-silicon-carbide binders bring it all to a halt. The car is also dressed to kill, with MONSTER wheels, classy bodywork and some interesting decals. Of course it also wears a wing, though the appendage looks like more of an afterthought than a carefully integrated component. What’s your opinion?

2014 Shelby GT500

Ford Mustang GT500

Nothing screams “‘MURICA!” louder than guns, steak and freedom, though the Shelby GT500 may give these red-white and blue items a run for their money. This car’s 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine puts out 662 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque; its exhaust note could be a surrogate national anthem.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Review

Out back this Shelby-badged Ford ‘Stang features a slab-like aerodynamic appendage on its rump. The flat wing along other wind tunnel-tuned body parts contribute to 33 percent better aero-loading at 160 miles an hour than the comparable 2011 model. In short, the spoiler must do something…

2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Can Hyundai build a performance car that legitimately competes with vehicles like the Nissan 370Z, Chevrolet Camaro or Dodge Challenger? Yes, and they already have.

For the most part this brand’s Genesis Coupe is the real deal. It offers either a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a muscular 3.8-liter V6. The latter option churns out 348 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque on premium gasoline (output is slightly less on regular fuel). A choice of transmission is offered; drivers can select between a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic.

Of course, certain models feature a gigantic wing. Arguably it’s a little too large for the Genesis coupe, but it’s not overly ridiculous like some of the ones we’re about to highlight.

2015 MItsubishi Lancer Evolution

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo

This is where things get a little out of hand. The previous cars listed each have large rear spoilers, but they’re still within reason. Regrettably that “sensible excess” stops right here.

Without question the Lancer Evolution is Mitsubishi’s best model; there’s no denying it. The triple-diamond’s limited product range is lackluster at best, frightening at worst. The Evo, which is really, REALLY old at this point stands heads and shoulders above products like the Outlander Sport or Mirage.

SEE ALSO: Ford Mustang Boss 302 vs. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

This car is powered by a heroic 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that cuts a check for 291 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The GSR model, which comes with a five-speed manual transmission (a six-speed dual-clutch automatic is standard in the MR version), comes dressed with a ridiculously large wing. It sticks up about two stories above the trunk lid and is so off-putting it probably lowers property values wherever the driver goes.

2015 Subaru WRX STI

Subaru WRX STI

Michigan and Ohio State, Coke and Pepsi, Mario and Bowser; these are a few classic rivalries, but one epic automotive face-off involves the aforementioned Mitsubishi and Subaru’s WRX STI.

These cars are bitter enemies and justifiably so because they stack up so evenly. Both vehicles feature all-wheel drive, they’re both powered by turbocharged four-cylinder engines, they both offer manual transmissions and they both hail from Japan.

SEE ALSO: 2015 Subaru WRX STI vs. 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG

The STI has a 2.5-liter boxer powerplant under its hood. It delivers 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is the only gearbox available in this Scoobie; all-wheel drive is standard of course, as is a gigantic wing. Spoiler size is one definitive area where the WRX trumps the Evo and we’re not sure it’s a stat worth bragging about.

2015 Porsche 911 GT3

Porsche 911 GT3

With the WRX STI, you can treat yourself to a corpulent wing for just about $35,000. Not surprisingly something similar from the Porsche store is dramatically more expensive.

The oh-so-awesome 911 GT3 is equipped with a gaudy rear spoiler that looks like it was partially digested by some large herbivore. The whole package can be yours for right around $132,000; that’s approximately 3.7 times more than the Subaru. But is it 3.7 times better?

SEE ALSO: 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Review

Maybe, just maybe. The GT3 features a rear-mounted 3.8-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine that puts out 475 hp, a figure it achieves without any mechanical lungs. That’s right, it’s all natural; there’s NO turbo or supercharger in this car. The powerplant spins to 9,000 RPM and features a host of racing-grade technology. That works out to a monstrous 125 ponies per liter… WHOA NELLY!

2014 McLaren P1

McLaren P1

Unlike rival supercars form Ferrari or Lamborghini, McLaren machines are sport smooth and curvaceous bodies. Generally they lack hard edges and sharp angles. But just because they don’t look like an Italian exotic doesn’t mean they can’t move, and FAST.

Kicking things up a notch is the McLaren P1. It features a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that puts out 727 hp with 531 lb-ft of torque! An electric motor throws an additional 177 horses into the mix.

Just like a Prius this sucker’s a hybrid; unlike a Prius it’s enjoyable to drive. All told this powertrain is strong enough to accelerate the car to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds! Top speed is 217 miles an hour.

To keep the P1 shiny-side up and you out of the morgue, an adjustable rear wing can extend up to 300 millimeters above the body for greatly enhanced down force an better high-speed stability. That’s nearly a foot of extension! It’s like the flaps on a Boeing 777 though it looks a lot more like manatee flipper.

2014 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster

Lamborghini Veneno

One of if not the most sinister looking automotive wings ever conceived is found on the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster, a supercar that could have been designed with nothing more than a hatchet. This vehicle’s body is severely angular and somewhat choppy with lots of hard edges; it’s the antithesis of the rounded almost bulbous P1 and we absolutely LOVE it.

The car is so sharp you’d better keep a box of bandages nearby if you plan on getting closer than arm’s length from it. This ultra-rare machine is powered by a 6.5-liter V12 that puts out 740 hp.

SEE ALSO: Lamborghini Veneno First-Look Video

Its rear wing spans nearly the whole width of the body and it’s tied in with a sort of vestigial dorsal fin. The whole thing is totally wicked. If Satan drove, his personal ride would probably look something like this.

The Cobalt SS had a ridiculous whale fin that beats #6-11 easily.

  • ben nibohs

peugeot 405 factory wing, back in 94, it looked like it belonged on a racecar, not a fwd sedan! 😀

Most of these cars have tastefully small and attractive spoilers. The only ones I would consider “outrageous” are the supercars which are outrageous to begin with.

  • Karim

Ewww The only attractive spoiler in this list is the p1 why not mention the Lexus LFA or The Aventador Or The Lycan Hypersport Most Of Your List Is Generic And NON outrageous
