Three time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart was questioned and released by police in upstate New York yesterday after an on-track incident that killed a rival driver.
According to several reports driver Kevin Ward Jr. was killed after being hit by Stewart’s vehicle in the dirt track Sprint car race. On the previous lap the two driver’s bad bumped sending Ward’s car into the wall. Ward then exited his vehicle and appeared to be confronting Stewart on the track when he was struck by the speeding race car.
Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said Stewart has been cooperative and that the investigation is not criminal.
The incident occurred at Canandaigua Motorsports Park just south of Rochester, on the eve of Stewart’s NASCAR race at Watkin’s Glen today.
