The collaboration between Toyota and BMW could result in even more sports cars.

Rumor has it that Toyota is readying a sports car that will slot under its existing GT 86 model (Scion FR-S in America) and will draw inspiration from the BMW 1 Series (seen above). The compact Toyota sports car is currently codenamed 69DZ and according to Japan’s Best Car magazine, it will make its debut in 2017. The Japanese automaker plans on having its design inspired by the 1 Series to ensure its success in Europe and the model could even be developed in collaboration with the German automaker.

A concept version of the new sports car is expected to debut at next year’s Tokyo Motor Show and the three-door hatchback will likely be powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 130 hp mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard while a six-speed automatic will be available as an option. To make the model even more impressive, Toyota is aiming for a 2,200-lb weight for it.
