Faulty Airbag Warning Expanded to 7.8M Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has expanded its recall of faulty airbags.

Federal safety regulators now warn that as many as 7.8-million vehicles in the U.S. are impacted by defective airbags. They’re reiterating how important it is for consumers to determine if their vehicle is affected. NHTSA is recommending that owners visit automakers’ websites to verify whether or not their vehicle has been recalled.

The expanded bulletin now shows that 5.1 million Honda vehicles are affected by this issue. Toyota will have to repair some 877,000 cars and trucks, Nissan has almost 695,000 vehicles to fix, BMW nearly 628,000 and Chrysler more than 371,000.

“Responding to these recalls, whether old or new, is essential to personal safety and it will help aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures,” David Friedman, NHTSA deputy administrator, said in statement.
