2016 Ford F-150 to Offer CNG, Propane Option

Ford has announced a compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane prep kit for the 2016 F-150.

The American automaker will offer a version of its 5.0-liter V8 that will run on either CNG or propane, making Ford the only manufacturer of a CNG-powered half-ton pickup truck. Towing capability will remain the same with the engine upgrade, while payload will also remain the same minus the added weight of the new system.

Customers will pay $315 to get the CNG/propane prep kit on their 2016 F-160 from the factory, while the fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors will be supplied by an approved modifier. The upfit will cost anywhere from $7,500 to $9,500 depending on fuel tank size. The five year/60,000 mile engine and powertrain limited warranty is not affected by the upfit, though the modifier is responsible for the system component warranty.

Ford has four different certified modifiers who will complete the CNG or propane bi-fuel upfit: Altech-Eco, based in Asheville, North Carolina (CNG); IMPCO Automotive, based in Sterling Heights, Michigan (CNG or propane); Westport, based in Dallas (CNG); Venchurs Vehicle Systems, based in Adrian, Michigan (CNG).

The CNG/propane factory prep kit will be available to order on the 2016 F-150 starting this summer.
