Believe it or not, a four-time world champion isn’t the highest paid Formula 1 driver.
According to Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo, Fernando Alonso driving for McLaren is actually the highest paid driver in Formula 1, netting around $38.31 million per year. In second is now-Ferrari driver and four-time world champ, Sebastian Vettel earning about $30.65 million annually. Rounding out the top three is Lewis Hamilton, taking home a cool $27.36 million a year.
Earnings drop off fairly significantly outside the top three paid drivers. Kimi Raikkonen gets $19.70 million while Nico Rosberg brings him $14.78 million. Starting with the 14th position is when drivers start earning less than one million a year, with Daniil Kvyat getting around $820,725. The publication reported Robert Merhi earns $54,725 a year.
This year, Fernando Alonso returned to McLaren but the group hasn’t been doing very well. The team is competing with the McLaren MP4-30, which is powered by an engine provided by Honda.
