Honda Adds 4.5M More Vehicles to Takata Airbag Recalls

Honda has announced the recall of another 4.5 million vehicles as a result of faulty Takata airbags.

About 1.6 million Honda Fit, CR-V and Stream vehicles in Japan are affected by this latest recall action. Honda is still compiling details on vehicles affected in other markets, though the brand says that this recall action does not affect any vehicles in North America.

In total, Honda has now called back 24.5 million vehicles worldwide over Takata airbag inflators, which can explode with too much force, causing shrapnel to fly at the vehicle’s occupants. So far, eight deaths have been directly linked to the problematic airbags.

An investigation revealed that moisture seeping into the inflators can cause the propellant to lose density over time, raising the risk of an inflator rupture. Independent investigations are ongoing into the root cause of this problem.

Earlier this week, Nissan disclosed the first Takata airbag related injury in one of its vehicles. In total, more than 36 million vehicles have been affected by this issue worldwide, spread over 11 different manufacturers.
