Aston Martin’s CEO Says Tesla Ludicrous Mode is ‘Stupid’

Aston Martin is gearing up to release an electric vehicle and its CEO didn’t mince words talking about its competition.

“We don’t do Ludicrous because Ludicrous speed is stupid,” Aston CEO Andy Palmer told Automotive News, talking about Tesla’s new drive mode that allows its Model S sedan to launch from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds.

Instead of gimmicky drive modes, Palmer wants to offer a track-ready EV that is fun to drive and offers a range of at least 200 miles. “I think that the fact that you could drive a few laps of a decent race course or race it around the Nordschleife [famed track in Germany] is much more interesting than doing 500 meters in Ludicrous mode.”

The British luxury brand has plans to release an all-electric version of its Rapide sedan that will push EVs into new ultra-luxury territory with a price tag of somewhere between $200,000 and $250,000. “What Tesla clearly shows you is we haven’t hit the ceiling in terms of price,” said Palmer.

In that price bracket, Palmer says that customers are looking for “something beyond a pure technology play, they start now looking for legacy,” something which Aston Martin has a lot of.

This guy sounds like a total dick.

  • agreed

  • Riiiiiick

    Yup, pretty much an idiot.

  • All products from mind of musk are derivative knockoffs cloaked in ‘tech play.’ Has led to ludicrous product announcements covering nonexistent things. Government shovels money at him and some folks have jobs. Found a positive note to end this on

  • disqus_ZsYGT7SCym

Aston losing custom and getting desperate. They should stick to ripping people off and fat cigars for the board.

  • And Preposterous Mode is BULLSHIT!~

What are you talking about?? How is the Tesla company a derivative knockoff?? Name one VALID reason why you think their products are derivative OR knockoffs. Tesla didn’t invent the electric car (duh) but Tesla has pioneered the technology and has gotten it into the hands of the masses.

And the real truth is that the government has a long (and shadowy) history of trying to inhibit the progress of the electric car, because they are in bed with the oil companies. Why do you think that it has taken SO long to get a technology off the ground that is actually quite old? (Do the research, I can’t do everything for you).

For that matter, why, then, do you call Musk’s products derivative knockoffs when NO ONE ELSE HAS THE BALLS TO DO WHAT HE DID. NO ONE else was making electric cars when Tesla came out with the Tesla Roadster. It’s only NOW that car companies are producing shameless, derivative knockoffs of TESLA, not the other way around. I’m not an Elon Musk fanboy, in fact I have no desire to own a Tesla car, but look at the facts before you go around hating on something just because it’s popular.

You better put some effort in improving quality of Aston M.then to talk nonsences

  • The company is excellent method of utilizing funds being thrown in great quantities for long term empire(s). The idea holding most interest to backers is pushed to forefront. Superb to have a product ready to sell covering many facets of one planet resource availability. Many critical judgements among customers would take current losses of 5K+ per vehicle would increase beyond redemption. Use that base to buy, build, acquire component supply side and receive equity position while building the supplier to stage it can provide materials needed. Alan, I am talking about the design of current and near launch products. No flame war pyrotechnics from me. No intent to denigrate Mr. Musk. The business case is awesome. Design of vehicles needs something that proclaims heritage. Where to make feature suggestion?

    It IS beautiful.

I’ve only heard of one horizontally integrated construction (roads, bridges…) operation which may rank slightly higher in owners happiness. The gravel quarry being in gold mine residue. They had bought an above ground rich gold vein. Activities included rock quarry to make road base rock. After pulling the gold and selling it. GREAT way to build an operation; Cash.
