IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson in Coma Following Accident at Pocono

IndyCar driver Justin Wilson is currently in a coma due to a head injury suffered during Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway.

It appeared that Wilson was struck by a piece of debris from Sage Karam’s car when it crashed in front of Wilson during the final laps of the race. Wilson’s car veered to the left as soon as the piece of debris struck his helmet and ended up in the inside wall on the exit of Turn 1. Safety workers acted immediately to extricate Wilson from the number-25 Andretti Autosport Honda.

Once Wilson was taken out of his car, he was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Network Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is believed that Wilson was unconscious and not responding when he was airlifted to the hospital.

IndyCar released a short statement confirming that Wilson was in a coma and is in critical condition while undergoing further evaluation.
