Bentley is claiming that its upcoming Bentayga is the world’s fastest SUV, having gone 187 mph in high-speed testing.
Ever since it was officially announced that Bentley was developing an SUV, the British automaker has been claiming it will be the world’s fastest, and it looks like Bentley will keep its word. Undergoing high-speed testing at an undisclosed track (likely Volkswagen’s secret testing facility in Germany), Bentley released a video showing the Bentayga hitting a top speed of 301 km/h, or 187 mph, with its 6.0-liter W12 engine with 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The Bentley Bentayga is also aiming for the title of the world’s most powerful SUV.
The debate on world’s fastest SUV will be interesting. Although the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S has a rated top speed of 176 mph according to the German automaker’s website, Porsche R&D executive Wolfgang Hatz has gone on the record saying “Our Cayenne is always very, very quick. It is doing 300 km/h [186 mph].” That means technically the Bentayga will be the world’s fastest SUV, but it’s by a small margin of just 1 km/h – but hey, isn’t that what records are for?
But then again, there’s the Jeep Grand Cherokee Track Hawk around the corner and that will be packing 707 hp from a Hellcat engine, meaning Bentley has its work cut out if it wants to keep the title of world’s most powerful SUV. In addition, Porsche has already promised that the next Cayenne will be faster than the Bentayga, so Bentley’s claims to both titles might be short lived.
