Volvo has a 450-horsepower powertrain and it could find its way into the XC90 Polestar model.
Starting with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the Swedish automaker has attached two turbochargers and a supercharger to the mill, delivering 450 hp in an unorthodox fashion. The company has been testing the engine in an S60 sedan and it is reportedly under consideration for Polestar models with the Volvo XC90 Polestar seeming like a perfect fit.
Recently Volvo acquired the tuning division responsible for building those bright blue wonders sporting the Polestar nameplate, and it’s not a stretch to believe the 450-hp triple-charged engine will be used on a high-performance variant of Volvo’s newest model.
The prototype engine uses a 48-volt electric supercharger that resides upstream from two BorgWarner turbochargers and would result in a powerful crossover offering in a segment that is becoming increasingly competitive.
