Commercials Where Automakers Aren’t Afraid to Make Fun of Themselves

Commercials Where Automakers Aren’t Afraid to Make Fun of Themselves

It says a lot about someone, or a company in this case, when they are able to make fun of themselves.

We all know that a Toyota Prius isn’t badass, which is why its latest Super Bowl commercial is so absurdly funny. The automaker has no problems making fun of itself, which really makes it easier to appreciate how good this ad is.

But Toyota isn’t the only one who is used to some self-deprecation. Here are a few other commercials from automakers that showcase a clever amount of self awareness.

Scion x James Franco

Just as the company began to hit its stride in terms of advertising, Scion as a brand is dead and its vehicles are being merged with the rest of the Toyota lineup. In its latest campaign, it points out how weird its cars are with actor James Franco. In the ad, the company loudly wonders “It’s weird how he even agreed to be in our ad,” as if the company itself knows how under the radar they are with celebrity endorsements.

VW Das Auto

Volkswagen is no stranger to self-deprecating humor, but this take on the European car enthusiast culture always gives us a good laugh. Volkswagen suggests you un-pimp your ride with a new GTI, although some owners will likely re-pimp it anyways.

Subaru Sumo commercials

This ad is not only a funny take on the usual “hot girls washing a hot car” scene, but it can be seen as Subaru being so confident, as if the brand says “our cars don’t need that much sex appeal anyways.”

Buick Commercials

Buick knows that its cars have a reputation for being, well, designed for older buyers. The latest ads have people – or, in this case, dogs – exclaiming that the car they’re looking at simply can’t be a Buick. This ad sums it up perfectly with a dog saying that it’s been chasing Buicks for 91 years, and that it can’t believe the Enclave isn’t a Buick. Sorry, Duke, but it is.

Toyota Yaris “It’s a car!”

The “It’s a Car” campaign for the Yaris is perfectly simple. The Toyota Yaris is a simple car, and needs a simple commercial to accommodate it. Comedian Michael Showalter asks “Do you go places sometimes, and leave places other times. Maybe you need a Yaris.” Well, yeah that’s one option, isn’t it?

Mercedes Fashion Week

Luxury car ads tend to have intense monologues with gorgeous people. Mercedes knows this and has probably been caught doing the same cliche ads in the past. But for the Berlin Fashion Week, they issued these funny ads that play off the usual overly dramatic car commercials.
