Top 10 Cars That Get the Most Traffic Tickets

You might be inclined to believe that exotics and supercars are the ones that get the most traffic tickets, but a recent study proves otherwise.

Insurance.com analyzed quote information submitted by 323,349 drivers between January 1, 2014 and February 1, 2016 to see which vehicles get ticketed the most. It was able to review insurance claim and traffic violation data from 331 models to see which cars have the highest percentage of tickets. Of course, drivers get tickets and not cars, but it’s interesting to see which cars might be more prone to getting pulled over.

10. Toyota Tacoma

Toyota Tacoma drivers seem to attract the police with 30.1 percent having tickets. Toyota Tundra drivers fare a little better at 23 percent.

9. Acura CL 3.0s

acura-cl-3-0s

Coming in ninth place is the Acura CL 3.0S with 30.1 percent of owners having paid a fine or two. It’s a sharp contrast from recent buyers of the Acura ILX, which is one of the least ticketed vehicles at 5.6 percent.

8. Dodge Stratus SXT

It’s perfectly acceptable if you don’t remember the Dodge Stratus, but apparently, owners are trying to make an impression. Based on Insurance.com’s data, 30.2 percent of owners have received tickets.

7. Volkswagen GTI

Sometimes, there’s a hefty price to pay for extra performance with 30.3 percent of Volkswagen GTI owners seeing blue and red in their rearview mirror. Standard Golf owners are a bit better with following the law with 23.4 percent of owners getting tickets.

6. Mazda3 S

Mazda3 owners might be zoom-zooming a bit too much. According to the data, 30.3 percent of Mazda3 S owners have been slapped with a ticket.

5. Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS/LT

It might be a rarity to see these on the streets these days, and maybe that’s why the cops are pulling them over. You know, just to make sure it’s a real Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Owners may want to keep an eye out, since 30.8 percent have received tickets.

4. Volkswagen Jetta GL

Things get a bit interesting with the Volkswagen Jetta GL, since nothing is more vanilla than the German automaker’s sedan. Still, 31.4 percent of owners have been ticketed. It almost doesn’t even matter which Jetta trim level you have, since almost all of them sit above 20 percent. But GL owners tend to get pulled over more often.

3. Dodge Charger SE/SXT

dodge-charger-sxt

We are surprised it’s not the Dodge Charger R/T on the list, but only 23.9 percent of those owners have been ticketed. Drivers behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger SE or SXT however aren’t so lucky, with 32.1 percent having paid a fine.

2. Nissan 350Z

Probably the least surprising of all the vehicles on the list is the Nissan 350Z. It’s not hard to see that most owners bought the sports coupe to have fun and it shows with 32.5 percent of them having received a ticket.

1. Lexus ES300

lexus-es-300

But consider us shocked with the Lexus ES300 at the top of the list, with 33.4 percent of its owners having received a ticket. That number drops substantially when it comes to the ES350 model to 16 percent. It gets even stranger since the Lexus IS350 is one of the least ticketed cars at 3.4 percent. You might want to keep an eye out for those drivers behind the wheel of the older Lexus ES300, they might be trying to get somewhere really fast.

Actually, the only two on this list that surprise me are the Mazda3 and the Toyota Tacoma.

The rest of the cars listed are ones I frequently see being driven recklessly by younger, male drivers and/or lower income people in urban areas.

    oh nuts!
There go my dreams of trading up to a Dodge Stratus SXT.

I think a lot has to do with the people that own these cars. People that own the ES300 are usually old and not paying attention. So if they stray over the speed limit they will never know and they won’t know where cops are hiding. Where as people with fast cars are always going fast and looking out for police. Also they usually have some sort of radar detector.

    Guilty as charged for #6.

  • MarkVII88

Well, the Monte Carlo and the Dodge Stratus can be said to essentially be white trash-mobiles (along with Pontiac G6 and older Grand-Ams). I’m not surprised these are ticketed at a higher level. The GTI, Mazda3, and Jetta are likely to be owned by younger, probably male drivers with a tendency to speed. Is anyone surprised about the Nissan? The Acura and the Dodge Charger SE/SXT are the biggest mystery to me. Perhaps they could fall under the same envelope as the Lexus…older, less attentive drivers.
