Fernando Alonso has managed to walk away from a terrifying crash at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
The two-time world champion said he’s lucky to be alive after a crash that destroyed the McLaren–Honda race car, which flipped repeatedly after Alonso clipped the rear of Esteban Gutierrez of Haas Racing. The car hit a barrier on turn three at the Albert Park circuit on lap 17 of 57, with the wrecked car coming to rest upside down. Alonso somehow managed to get himself out of the mess and walked away from the accident and Gutierrez was unscathed.
The accident caused a 22-minute delay in the race, but both drivers are embraced and shook hands immediately after the crash.
“I am lucky to be here and thankful to be here,” said Alonso. “It was a scary moment and a scary crash. When I stopped I saw a little space to get out of the car and I went out quickly just to make sure that my mum, who was watching the race on TV at home, could see that I was okay.
