New Mazdaspeed Models Aren’t Arriving Anytime Soon

New Mazdaspeed models aren’t arriving anytime soon.

According to a recent report from Motoring, Mazda has decided to shelve a new generation of Mazdaspeed models so that it can focus on developing a second-generation of SkyActiv II vehicles. It appears that the Japanese automaker was developing a new Mazdaspeed3 concept to debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, but axed it in favor of the Koeru concept that previews the Mazda CX-4 concept. Speaking to Motoring, one of Mazda’s senior global executives, Mashiro Moro, called the latest Mazdaspeed offerings “childish” and wants the the next generation of models to be more mature.

As a result, Moro made it clear that new Mazdaspeed models will be different than their predecessors and will more closely resemble the company’s desire to move upmarket. “Mazda brand has become more mature, more upscale, more sophisticated and we have a new transition of the brand to relate that direction,” he said. “So if we were to introduce some kind of performance model, that may be different to what we have done in the past.”

Unfortunately, there is no currently no timeline for a reintroduction of Mazdaspeed models, but they likely won’t arrive until the next-generation Mazda3 and Mazda6 are rolled out.
